What is the use of adding pasta in minestrone soup recipe?

I love to have soups in winters as they keep you warm for long and they are also a good appetizer. My friend has told me about minestrone soup recipe which is made using pasta, beans and vegetables. I have never heard any soup recipe which I can make using pasta. Before I try it I want to know what it tastes like and what if I will not add the pasta in it? Has anyone out there ever tried this kind of soup recipe? I have never tried making soup at home so I am little skeptic and want to be really careful. It will be really nice if anyone would like to give me some tips on making soups at home.
