Can somebody please elaborate on food for diabetes?

My dad is 48 years old and he has recently been diagnosed with diabetes, and the doctor has recommended healthy diet to keep his health in order. I want to know about a few food for diabetes, which could be taken by my dad, and also a list of such foods, which should be simply avoided by him? In addition, if you guys can help with some links or reliable websites related to food for diabetes, it will be really appreciated? Thanks.

You are absolutely right. Your father has got diabetes and I hope that it is not alarming. Diabetes is called a slow killer. It kills people slowly by damaging primary organs if it is not controlled (diabetes cannot be cured, only can be controlled) in early stages. To control it, diet restriction and follow of that strictly is the only step. There are medicines which can control it but food restriction is very very necessary. First of all your father should not take sugar anymore. Should or must get rid of anything that is sweet. He can have some sugar in tea or other drink in the form of sugar replacement sweeteners. Now here is a list of food which you can take when you have diabetes.

Starches are good sources of carbohydrate, vitamin, mineral and fiber. Consuming some starches during each meal is healthy for diabetic patients.

Vegetables are good for fiber, vitamin, mineral but low on carbohydrate. Properly cooked (like steam cooking) fresh vegetables are good at this point. You can have vegetables that are cooked with fat free olive oil too.

Fresh fruits are good for eating. But if fruit juice and dried fruit are taken, they should be free of sugar.

Milk is the main source of carbohydrate, calcium, protein, vitamin and mineral. Therefore take fat free milk when there is diabetes. You can have yogurt instead of full cream too.

Meat though is a provider of protein, vitamin and mineral but once diabetes has happened, it should be taken in a very very restricted way or in small amount. Moreover meat should be cooked or prepared in a healthy and proper way.

Here are some links from which you can have some idea also - www.diabetesdietfor diabetic.com, powerverbs.com for diabetes food chart, carryfitness.com/diabetes-diet-chart. But you have a chart prepared by the doctor already. Rely on it. Thank you.
