We live in a world where everyday leads to the increment of more and more industrial complexes with the decrement of empty fields. Say hello to the problem that is by and by grabbing every country in its vice-like grip: food shortage. Food, one of the fundamental necessities of human survival is, as a result of industry and digital technology being the focal point of the world, losing priority. Ironical, in juxtaposition to the fact that we can’t live without food!! Thus, the world may be looking at an all-new calamity, which is the whole world starving to death. However, will that ever be allowed to occur?? As citizens of this planet, we will shake our heads in denial, but we really need to find a solution to this budding disaster.

A simple answer and yet an innovative one is the implementation of ecological methods to combat this growing problem. What is referred to by ecological methods?? Simply put, ecological methods are ways by which the existing ecosystem in a specific are can be put to the best use, to reduce food shortage and insecurity issues in that particular area. Thus, by fighting the problem at the micro level, the fight can be taken to the macro level. Therefore, by solving such food insecurities in miniscule areas that make up the whole, the entire infrastructure will be rehabilitated from this modern plague.

“What are the ecological methods?” would be the obvious question put forward. Citing an example to clarify all doubts, the people of Xai Xai, situated in Mozambique, in a time of acute shortage of food that occurred on a yearly basis for four to five months per year, implemented the EbA technology, or ecosystem based adaptation to reduce the crisis. This involved the substitution of farming and other activities and such other livelihoods for crab farming and investing in mangrove nurseries. This helped to save at least 500 households, who up till then had faced problems of food allocation. This method was this much successful as the area of Xai Xai was suitable to the farming of crabs. In addition to the crabs, mangrove planting helped to increase the breeding grounds of other sea creatures.

This is the whole of ecological adaptation in a nutshell. The initialisation of such steps in more areas all across the world will help to channelize the resources of that area in the most fruitful direction, thus collectively helping to solve the problem.

In an increasingly competitive world, where there are individual demands to meet, where every consumer has got into his mind that he will be treated with respect, and his demand honored, fast food franchisees are rustling up increasingly stranger and weirder menus to satisfy the taste buds of consumers.

It is an age, where in spite of globalization, there is always a huge cloud of localization looming at the backdrop. It is for this precise reason that the fast food franchisee, McDonalds, has introduced different types of menus in different parts of the world in order to satisfy the altogether diverse demand patterns of different countries. This has inevitably led to the innovation and creation of more and more odd, if not grotesque food items.

One of the first and foremost that comes to our mind is something that is found in McDonalds Australia. In places virtually all over the world, people like to spread a something, a topping over their toast. Some like jelly, some jam, some peanut butter, others just plain and simple butter. However, Australians have got a little weird secret up their sleeves, something that makes their tongues waggle so much, it is featured on McDonalds’ menu. Introducing the Vegemite, a piece of toast spread over with the leftover yeast after the manufacture of beer. It’s recycling all the way, and with a price tag stamped on it.

Go to Japan, and you get to sink your teeth into an even stranger dish. We have all heard of cheese burger, chicken burger, even veg burger, but, wait for it, Shrimp Burger?? Whoever hears it goes like, “What the??” Nobody knows why even McDonalds got the idea in the first place to combine the diverse dualities of shrimp and burger in a singularity. However, it is done and is named EBI Filet-O in Japan. It is of course a way to bring the tastes of the Occident and the Orient together, but nevertheless, does sound odd.

However, the oddest of the odds is still to go. Take the next flight to Kuala Lumpur, go to a McDonalds there, and you can get to offer a something called, Chicken Singa Porridge. In what may be one of the weirdest combinations anywhere in the world, this is a bowl of porridge with bits of chicken, ginger, carrots and other veggies added to it.

McDonalds is doing a great job of satisfying the hungry bellies everywhere, at the same time redefining the limitations of cooking, but nevertheless, restraint, anyone??

In a world of gourmet cuisine, where the heterosexual male is fast changing to the gastrosexual male, where all day work fattens your wallet and the lining of your belly, and at the same time, the counters of fast food centers, food is an omnipotent and omnipresent element of our lives that if not regulated properly, can ultimately lead to our sipping of insipid liquids.

In this increasingly junk food dependent society, due to multiple and miscellaneous reasons, it is of the utmost importance that we analyze our food habits and keep them in check as per necessary. One of the utmost needs is restraining from the consumption of junk food. Junk foods are of course, lip smacking and delicious at the same time. After a hard day at work, to sink in your teeth into dollops of cheese may be the very definition of heaven, but beware for Man got thrown out of Paradise. In this way, all that glitters may not be gold.

There are certain fundamental anomalies that are incorporated into the human brain since birth. Thus, being a part of common sense, they are generally neglected. However, to err is human. What is the seemingly harmless act of eating two large meals and two small meals can actually affect our digestive system, for it has to function on a haphazard basis. The proper thing to do therefore is to take small meals at regular intervals, thus mitigating the collective pressure at one period of time and dissipating them among various time frames.

What may seem to be quite harmless liquids and utterly insignificant in consequence and after effects upon the body may not be so. Recent research conducted has propounded that the consumption of tea in excessive amounts may actually harm the bones of the human body, leading to ossification. Thus, what may be quite harmless is always not so.

A humongous mistake in the diet plans of an average human is the non-consumption of fruits and vegetables. Veggies still go in in some form or the other, but fruits that are an absolute necessity get quite unintelligibly left out of the equation.

Lastly, a balanced diet being a necessity was propounded and taught to us during our childhood days in schoolbooks. Today, standing on the verge of digestive disaster, do we get to understand the significance of those two words.

Food is the ultimate fuel of our bodies, whether we like it or not. The proper regulation of this is utterly necessary, that we may facilitate the permanence and longevity of our human machines.

A Simnel Cake is the traditional two-layered light fruit cake that is made for Laetare Sunday, the middle Sunday of Lent that is also nicknamed Simnel Sunday, Sunday of the Five Loaves, Mothering Sunday and Refreshment Sunday in the UK, Ireland and other neighboring countries. Developed in medieval England, the cake is topped with eleven or twelve marzipan balls to represent Jesus and the twelve apostles excluding of course the notorious Judas. Here is an easy to follow but traditional take on the classic Easter recipe.

Prep time: 1 hour

Cooking time: 2 Hours

Servings: 10-12

Type: Fruit cake

Course: Dessert

Place of origin: UK

Ingredients

For the cake layers

Butter or margarine 175gms

Brown sugar 175gms

Beaten eggs 3 free-range

Plain flour 175gms

Salt a pinch

Ground mixed spice ½ tsp (optional)

Sultanas, currants and mixed raisins 350gms

Chopped mixed peel 55gms

Grated lemon zest ½

Apricot jam 2 tbsp

For the almond paste

Caster sugar 250gms

Ground almonds 250gms

Beaten eggs 2

Almond essence 1 tsp

For the glazing

Beaten egg 1 free-range

Preparation

For the cake

Combine sugar and butter together till fluffy and pale and beat in eggs. In another bowl, soft flour, mixed spice and salt together and fold in the egg, sugar and butter mix. Stir in grated lemon zest, peel and mixed dried fruit. Pour the mix into a lined and greased 7 inch cake tin and bake in a preheated oven at 140C or 275F for around 1 and ¾ hours. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

For the almond paste

In a bowl, combine ground almonds, sugar and beaten egg and mix till soft. Add almond essence and knead till smooth. Use the paste to roll out two 7 inch diameter circles and use the rest to make 11 or 12 small balls.

Decorating and finishing the cake

When cooled, cut the cake into two evenly thick circles. Brush the tops of both cake circles with apricot jam. Place the almond cake circle on the bottom half of the cake and place the other half of the cake on top. Place the second almost paste circle on top of it. Set the almond paste balls around the edges of the cake and glaze with lightly beaten egg. Place the decorated cake in preheated oven and grill on high for 1-2 minutes till the top begins to brown a bit.

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 5 minutes

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Crabmeat (cartilage removed and flaked) 12 ounces

Seasoned and divided bread crumbs 1 cup

Lightly beaten egg 1

Green onions (finely chopped) 1/4 cup

Sweet red pepper (finely chopped) 1/4 cup

Mayonnaise (reduced-fat) 1/4 cup

Lemon juice 1 tablespoon

Garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon

Cayenne pepper 1/8 teaspoon

Butter 1 tablespoon

Salt To taste

Preparation

In a large bowl, lightly beat the mayonnaise and egg. To the mixture, add the onions, half of the breadcrumbs, crabmeat, red pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, salt and lemon juice. Combine the ingredients well and divide the mixture into eight equal portions. Wash and dry hands and lightly grease palms before rolling each crabmeat mixture portion into a round ball. Layer a dish with the remaining breadcrumbs and roll the crabmeat mixture balls in them till they are thickly coated. Flatten the balls into a half inch thick patty and pat down in the breadcrumbs once again. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat and add butter to it. Before the butter browns, add the crabmeat patties to the skillet and cook on each side for roughly 3-5 minutes or until golden brown. If you like your crabcakes to have some extra crunch, you can brown them a bit more as well.

Tips

Crabcakes are best served with a chilled beer or a light white wine like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc.

The largest food company in the world, Nestle was one of the names that ended up in the recent horsemeat scandal. JBS from Brazil is the largest producer of beef in the world was also present in the list of companies that are caught up in the scandal. This scandal has risen recently and has made hundreds of super stores to remove all the beef products from their inventories as they are thought of containing horsemeat. The scandal is becoming hotter by the day and when the names of JBS and Nestle popped up regarding the same then the whole world was shocked.

Swiss based Nestle made an official announcement recently that it has decided to remove two of its products in Spain and Italy namely beef tortellini and beef ravioli from shelves as when checked they showed signs of horse DNA in them. Frozen lasagnas from Nestle were removed from Portugal and France and this was done because of the same reason. The DNA of horse was encountered in meat products that were made from the meat which came from H.J.Schype which is actually a German company. This piece of information was shared by Nestle recently with the public.

JBS from Brazil said that it has decided to stop purchasing meat from European vendors until the issue of trust is completely sorted out. JBS made an attempt to stay aloof from this scandal by clearly saying that H.J.Schype was not in anyway associated with JBS. JBS also confirmed that no indications of co-mingling have been encountered in the products that come from JBS or have been produced in their factories. H.J.Schype on the other hand has denied any sort of mistake from their side.

Schype told that all the raw stuff bought by them is from trusted suppliers and they have certainly not bought horsemeat. H.J.Schype expressed regret regarding the scandal and also gave an assurance to perform genetic tests on raw stuff in the future. The German authorities gave their report and it came to light that out of the total 360 tests 24 tests have officially confirmed traces of horsemeat in the products. The authorities also told that they will be able to reveal the real culprit but it will take some more time. This scandal is surely huge and every step is being taken to resolve the issue and regain the trust of people.

What do you think happens when some of the most notable personalities from the culinary world choose their best food scenes? Unexpected responses are what you will experience in the situation. Some of the nominations of screen cuisine that came forth as Oscar worthy examples are listed below. Fabio Viviani who gained popularity from the cookery show Top Chef Season 5 and is also the host of Yahoo’s Chow Ciao seems to have taken a practical road for making his picks. The choices made by him are the scene ‘Godfellas’ which depicted Paulie slicing garlic with the help of a razor.

As per Fabio it is indeed an amazing way of doing the job as it gives very thin pieces of garlic and he was impressed by the scene so much that he could almost smell the tomatoes and garlic inside the screen. What is Fabio’s takeaway you might ask then according to him any kind of food becomes special when it is with the people you love like family and friends. It came as a surprise that none of the famous culinary people opted for scenes from the popular movies such as ‘Tampopo’ and ‘Big Night’.

Coleman Andrews said that he remain surrounded with food talk all day long as it is a part of his career and when he sits down food is the probably the last thing he wants to think about. According to Coleman great food scenes are the ones that enchant him in a non-food manner. The best scene according to him is from the movie ‘Hook’ where the adult Peter Pan joins Lost Boys in banquet. Coleman said that the scene really said a lot of appetite and the feeling of joy that food brings.

Michael Mina also chose some very unique food scenes from the movies. As per him the scene from ‘Pulp fiction’ is among his favorites where Vincent and Jules are talking in a diner over breakfast. According to Michael there is no flaw in the scene as it is absolutely brilliant in every manner. Michael Mina happens to be a big fan of breakfast and loves cooking omelets. Culinary notables from different places really put their unique choices forward which were not expected by anyone. These choices by the chefs showed their individual taste and preferences and everyone had a different story to tell.
