Can any one tell me about some food safety tips?

I have recently learned cooking and I was planning to join food safety course. I want to know will this course really help me to learn everything about safety in cooking from the scratch or I need to know some facts before I start my course. But before I start this course I was wondering if any one could tell me about some food safety tips that I should know before I start cooking as I don’t want to injure my self.
