Are whole food supplements superior to vitamin and mineral supplements?

I am concerned about my son’s health, as he is a fussy eater and I therefore, I give him vitamin and mineral supplements so that he doesn’t miss on these vital nutrients, important to his health. However, lately a friend has advised me to give whole food supplements instead to my son, as it is superior to the vitamin and mineral supplements. In addition, the whole food supplements provide ample of nutrients to growing children. I want to know if whole food supplements are indeed best for teenagers and if I can stop giving other supplements to my son once he starts taking whole food supplements. Can somebody please advice appropriately?
