How to prepare Japanese food easily?

My mom-in-law loves Japanese cuisine, and I can’t even tell the difference between sashimi and sushi! I am perturbed, as she would be coming to live with us coming weekend, and she expects me to prepare Japanese food for her! I really want to know how can I prepare it, as I don’t have an inkling of ingredients used in it. I would really be thankful if somebody is able to help me with a few basic recipes and some tips for cooking Japanese food! Can anyone help?

Here are some of the Japanese Food recipes and their cooking and their cooking methods for you:-

1. Okayu- If you like rice porridge then It's called okayu in Japan and is known to be an easily digestible dish. I like to have a simple okayu seasoned with salt, but you can also make it more nutritious by cooking it with chicken, vegetables and so on. You can add lots of toppings.

2. Marinated Vegetables- Lots of vegetables are deep fried and then marinated in dashi based soup. This type of dish is called as the age-bitashi which is usually served chilled. It's a good dish to make during hot season. You can use a variety of different vegetables for this dish.

3. Ume Flavored Wakame and Okra- They are very salty and also quite sour, you may not like the flavor. But it helps to stimulate your appetite and also it can add a nice flavor to many of your dishes. For example, they are used in salad dressings, simmering dishes, fried dishes and so on.

4. Chilled Tofu- It's a traditional tofu dish called as the hiyayakko. Chilled tofu is served with various toppings. There can be a wide variety of fresh or cooked ingredients according to your choice. Common toppings include katsuobushi, grated ginger, green onion, shiso (perilla), and so on.
